Sales Advisor, or in other words Sales assistant, is my current role at Ralph Lauren.
It is a title I wear with pride and honor as I get the opportunity to share my statement: ‘Be Unique, Be you’.
Many of my friends ask and have asked me about what I do at my work. To be honest with you, the answer is not that easy and I often forget to simplify it. But there is a reason for that, I am a firm believer that my work is “whatever” I make it to. You know the statement: “If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change”. This is how I see my situation. Many people have this poor eyesight on the title ‘Sales assistant’, which I had myself, to be honest with you and now I have to watch out what I am writing. But I do no like sales assistant. I do not like the fact that some sales assistant see people as money signs.
BE UNIQUE – BE YOU
Since I started I have worked hard and passionate on creating a clients base, people who want more in life. People who wants to express themselves. People who wants to be unique. 3 different statements, but one simple vision. In order to fulfill that vision I use one simple tool of mine, styling!
Secondly, I work daily with people, internal. A true honor for me. Here goes the list of people I surround myself with every day and learn from: PR Office, Marketing team, Creative team, The buyers, The Managers, The stockroom team, The tailoring team etc. One important factor is each and everyone on the Sales assistant team is unique in their own way, they have strong backgrounds, visions and experience within the industry which I truly admire and learn from. For instance, I have teamed up with a mate who studied menswear for 5 years at Central St. Martins, world-leading center for art and design education.
DO YOU KNOW RL
RL or in other words: Ralph Lauren, is the eponymous fashion empire of the legendary designer Ralph Lauren, who was born Ralph Lifshitz in the Bronx in 1939. The son of Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants from Belarus, Ralph changed his last name to Lauren at age 16. He studied business at Baruch College, served in the Army, and then took a sales job at Brooks Brothers. In 1967, he began designing big and colorful neckties in a time were people only made slim and simple color neckties. All this was under the name Polo, and that’s when the brand we know today really began.
Ralph Lauren is now comprised of numerous lines, ranging from formal and highly aspirational to more casual and accessible to specialized for unique aesthetics. As Mr. Porter reports, the common thread among all of them is the brand’s vision of an accomplished, refined life. Lauren himself once said, “I don’t design clothes, I design dreams.”
The biggest misunderstandings about my work from a Scandinavian point of view is the fact that people do not know how big of a company Ralph Lauren is. They do not know that under the RL empire (Menswear) we have different labels:
Polo you know?
The year is 1971 and Mr.Lauren just introduced the now-iconic polo player motif. In 1972, he released a short-sleeve polo shirt, embroidered with the polo player logo and offered in 24 colors. Polo Ralph Lauren was launched in 1968 as Lauren’s first full line, and its name was chosen because of the close association of classic style with the sport. With the brand’s polo shirt and beyond, Polo offers a full complement of American casual wear styled with Lauren’s famous preppy sensibility. This is one of the most accessible of Ralph Lauren’s lines, and this is where you can pick up an iconic polo shirt, stock up on classic-cool outerwear, or try on a versatile suit for size.
However, we need to go back a few years to 1968 when Polo Ralph Lauren was launched as Lauren’s first full line, and its name was chosen because of the close association of classic style with the sport. With the brand’s polo shirt and beyond, Polo offers a full complement of American casual wear styled with Lauren’s famous preppy sensibility. This is one of the most accessible of Ralph Lauren’s lines, and this is where you can pick up an iconic polo shirt, which has been a major crossover to the preppy style, especially by Scandinavian teenagers. Keep in mind within Polo lines we have following labels: Blue label, RLX and once we had the amazing label called Rugby.
And then we have 2 labels within the Luxury category called: RRL & Purple Label (Which previously included Black Label) etc.
Purple Label, yes that is the name. It was launched in 1994 as the signature men’s collection and specializes in luxurious, tailored apparel inspired by Saville Row. Purple Label is made in Italy, with traditional styles, classic cuts, and an emphasis on meticulous construction, most of which is completed by hand. In my opinion, I believe that every true Gentlemen has a desire for Purple Labels impeccable made to measure suit as well as their collection of jackets and outerwear. Though Black label started out as a different line, it eventually merged with Purple Label.
The fact that I work within a luxury environment is such a major factor for how I work and interact with people around me. We live in a world where everyday shopping stores have increased the level of service, therefore it is my job and duty to be creative, work hard and passionately to give the best and exclusive service solutions for my clients. It could be physically in the store or online, yes you probably guessed it already…Instagram have become a place of work for me now. I truly love the flexibility at my work!
However, I had my challenges to follow the rules within our Social Media policies… But luckily, I had my arguments in order, and the management was willing to take a chance on me, which led to success, so I guess it was worth it.
In addition to my work on an online platform, I do also work at home on my computer and Ipad. First of all, I track everything I do. I track my sales throughout the day, week, and month. I set up client lists on Excel, Write templates for myself, basically preparing emails which I will send the following days and finally, I make collages and plan out styling sessions with my clients. You know, sometimes I feel like I do more styling and admin work, rather than standing on shop-floor. Which I actually like, hmm…
Well, I hope you guys now have a better understanding of what I do and how I work as a “Sales assistant”.
